THOMAS WATSON—LIFE & WORKS

Thomas Watson (c.1620–1686) was an English Puritan preacher and highly readable devotional writer whose sermons and short books remain popular today.

Born probably in Yorkshire, he studied at Emmanuel College, Cambridge (BA 1639; MA 1642) and became famous for his careful study and clear, warm style of preaching.

In 1646 Watson began a long pastorate at St. Stephen’s, Walbrook, London, where his pulpit ministry made him one of the best-known preachers in the city. He was briefly imprisoned in 1651 for involvement with Christopher Love’s plot, and after the 1660–62 Restoration and the Act of Uniformity, he was ejected from his living for nonconformity, though he continued to preach privately when he could.

Watson’s writing is practical, devotional, and biblically rooted; he explained theological truths in plain language, aiming to shape Christian character and practice rather than win academic applause. His clear, pastoral tone contributed to a lasting influence among Reformed readers.
